Solenoids are basically electromagnets: they are made of a big coil of copper wire with an armature (a slug of metal) in the middle. When the coil is energized, the slug is pulled into the center of the coil. This makes the solenoid able to pull from one end.

This solenoid has a slug with a slanted cut. It's basically an electromagnetic lock, designed for a basic cabinet or safe or door. When the coil is not energised, the lock is active so you can't open the door because the solenoid slug is in the way. It does not use any power in this state. When power is applied, the slug pulls in so it doesn't stick out anymore and the door can be opened.

The solenoid is rated for 12V but also works with 9V supply (lower voltage results in weaker/slower operation). current consumption is about 1A at 12V. It has a throw of 10mm and threaded M3 mounting holes on the body. The wire lead is about 18cm long

Specifications:

  • 12VDC (you can use 9-12 DC volts, but lower voltage results in weaker/slower operation)
  • Draws 1A at 12V, 650 mA at 9V when activated

Dimensions:

  • 64.2(L) x 22.8(W) x 26.2(H)mm
  • Weight: 110g
