This Through-Beam Infrared Sensor Kit consists of two separate components: an Infrared transmitter and detector. They work by having an transmitter side that sends out a beam of human-invisible infrared light, then a detector across the way which is sensitive to that same light. When an opaque object passes between the two and block the infra-red beam, the detector's switch will turns on.
The output is an open collector which means that you will need a pull up resistor on the output pin if you want to read a digital signal off the signal wire. The open drain setup allows multiple sensors to be connected on a single input pin of the controller. If any of the sensor go off, the input pin will be pulled low. If you want to control a relay or LED or whatever, the detector can sink up to 100mA to ground.
